Your Pilates questions, answered.

New to Pilates or just new to Start Right Pilates? Here are the answers people find most useful before their first class.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low-impact form of movement practice focused on posture, core strength, control and joint mobility. It is widely used to help people move more confidently and build balanced strength.

Who is Pilates for?

Pilates has something to offer people of many ages and ability levels, from complete beginners to experienced athletes. Movements can be adapted to offer more support or more challenge.

Can I try a class before signing up?

Yes. A pay-as-you-go class is £12.50, so you can experience a session before choosing a six-week block.

Do I need to bring a mat?

Bringing your own mat is recommended, but the team can provide one for the day if you do not have one available.

What should I wear?

Choose comfortable clothing that lets you move freely. Clothing that is not too loose helps the instructor see your alignment and offer useful guidance. Leggings or shorts with a T-shirt work well.

Can men join?

Absolutely. Pilates is for anyone who wants to become a stronger, more confident mover.

What is the difference between Pilates and yoga?

Both can develop strength, balance, flexibility, posture and breathing. Yoga often places more emphasis on relaxation and meditation, while Pilates focuses closely on controlled movement, core strength and alignment.

How big are the classes?

Group sessions have a maximum of 12 people so that the instructor can support each person properly.
